Pastel de Nata Workshop at REAL Bakery

 

This is the only cooking class in Portugal where you’ll learn about pastry making at a real award-winning Portuguese bakery!

 

The class starts with an introduction to the history of Pastel de Nata as well as the family-run bakery where this workshop takes place. While we talk, you will also get to try other traditional pastries João’s bakery is famous for. After you’ve geared up, you’ll go inside the kitchen of João’s very own “pastelaria”. This is where you will learn how to bake the irresistible Portuguese Custard Tarts (aka Pastel de Nata / Egg Tarts) everybody loves!

 

Unlike other Pastel de Nata classes around Lisbon, we will show you how to make puff pastry like the pros. Afterwards, we will make the custard from scratch and bake it all inside a professional oven. In the end, we’ll eat the warm tarts with coffee, tea, Port wine or sour cherry liqueur!

Meet Chef João Batalha!

João was literally born into the food business! He is a 5th generation baker. When he was a baby, his crib used to be placed on top of the ice cream counter of his family's restaurant. By age 7 João was making coffee, standing on a chair to reach the espresso machine. By 12 he was mixing a killer sangria and his Dad would always get a little angry when he'd try to sip it before serving it. By 14 he started learning how to bake pastries and bread. That's when he decided he'd study hospitality management. He completed his studies in Spain, worked in London and he is now the owner of Pastelaria Batalha, which is popular for its high quality traditional Portuguese pastries and for its unique Pastel de Nata workshops.

What's Included?

All professional equipment and necessary ingredients are provided. Tasting Pastel de Nata (3 pies to eat as soon as they come out of the oven or to take home!). Drink of your choice: coffee, tea or liqueur from Ginja (aka Ginjinha). Small proof of other specialties prepared by João's team in Batalha Pastry.

Default group classes (up to 10 people) are in English.
